Blatantly false title. Please don’t exaggerate and add inflammatory commentary that’s misleading, it detracts from the conversation.

It was also the second time it happened. It was a mistake, but one that really shouldn’t have happened. And it was minor in terms of how long it was down, but not having access to 911 is potentially a major issue.

People are just sick of companies not being held responsible for repeated incompetence which often comes from cost cutting measures.

Well this is the technology community. Kinda obvious we’re all nerds here, and care about technology 🤷 and we don’t really have to look hard lol

The vast majority killed aren’t terrorists. Just yesterday, Israel killed seven World Kitchen humanitarian aid workers in their World Kitchen labeled cars that were authorized by Israel to be there. Three cars, targeted one after another, all bombed. The tops of the cars had the logo so they wouldn’t be bombed.

The IDF is a terrorist organization

Looking at their account, I’d honestly bet money that they’re an apple employee. Half of their posts and comments are about, and very much in favor of, Apple

Right, exactly. He could be worth billions if he wanted to, but he quit Apple early on. He still has shares of Apple which means he is worth that much, but he’s also given shares away to other Apple employees just because he believed they deserved them more. He does profit off slave labor in China, but my argument was that it’s not any more than the rest of us. Basically everyone participating in capitalism will benefit from its worst parts, but Steve Woz is not the poster child for capitalism, greed, or slave labor.

Woz doesn’t profit from slave labor in China any more than any of us since he hasn’t actually worked for Apple since like 1985. Since then, he’s started a number of other companies doing a bunch of other stuff, like cleaning space junk most recently

Hmm this couch looks familiar… anyways, I wonder how many teraflops I’ll be getting

There is a huge lack of quality content compared to tiktok. And it’s algorithm is horrendous.

Despite spending months trying to get YouTube to NOT show me far right, conservative, police loving, religious, or bigoted content, I still see it every once in a while. I’ve reported content, downvoted, selected ‘I’m not interested’ and nothing works.

There was a video from a lawyer about a black woman telling her child it’s ok to take the entire Halloween candy bowl and if legally that’s stealing.

Almost every other comment was some form of “well what do you expect from those people” or “it’s always the one you expect the most” or just straight up slurs. So many racist ‘jokes’ and I spent an hour just reporting comments.

Another video of a person driving through protestors blocking the road. Controversial and frustrating, I understand. But almost every comment was “the protestors deserve it” or “I’d drive through them too” and some real sociopathic shit.

And almost all the ads are horrendous. Literally Joe Rogan brain supplements, trashy weight loss, sketchy ai read ‘science’ on what doctors don’t want to to know. I would rather hear about Raid Shadow Legends.

I’ve found a couple gems in the mix, actual content creators that are funny or interesting. But almost all of them are also on TikTok too so there’s no reason to torture myself scrolling through a post apocalyptic wasteland. And there are so many quality creators on TikTok that aren’t on YouTube.

I believe a big part of it is (from what I’ve heard) TikTok has the best creator fund for paying the people who make videos. So without an outright ban, there’s no reason for them to switch. Really, this would be an absolutely huge win for YouTube/Google. And as much as I distrust TikTok, it would be a loss for creators and viewers. At least imo

The parent company of TikTok is ByteDance which is a company based in China. But TikTok as a company isn’t based in China.

From its Wiki:

Its parent company, Beijing-based ByteDance, is owned by founders and Chinese investors (20%), other global investors (60%), and employees (20%). TikTok Ltd owns four entities that are based respectively in the United States, Australia (which also runs the New Zealand business), United Kingdom (also owns subsidiaries in the European Union), and Singapore (owns operations in Southeast Asia and India).

TikTok says that since 2020, the US based CEO is responsible for making important decisions. However, multiple reports claim that there is little functional separation between TikTok and its Beijing-based executives and software developers. TikTok has been noted for downplaying its connection with ByteDance and for eschewing questions about its relationship with the Chinese government.

Well it’s not really a decision between “either not use them at all, or have a proper way to dispose of them”

Yes, there are applications we don’t have alternative materials that we can agree are essential like safety products. That being said, we should definitely cut down our use of PFAS for items like floss, cosmetics, etc while continuing to look for alternatives. We use it far too much just for added convenience, but that convenience could be doing a lot of harm.

Kinda like the idea in this article, seems like a good compromise

This is a weird piece to take from the article. An editor for the website who is not Ethiopian informally made the assumption that they don’t have the infrastructure and you’re saying it’s a fact they’re not ready for this.

Right before that it says; “(Minister) Sime further explained that efforts to establish charging stations for electric cars remain a high priority, and offered that the nation’s inability to access favorable foreign exchange resources has contributed to its inability to afford to continue importing gasoline and diesel.”

So this sounds like it’s more logistically viable than ice vehicles.

And the top comment on the article is someone from Ethiopia basically confirming that, and expanding upon it to say the country has been working towards full renewable energy for several decades. Why the pessimism?

As a parent, there is a way for kids to know what’s good for them.

What kids lack is experience and emotional maturity, not an understanding of their needs. If you actually listen to kids, they’ll surprise you with their observant, creative, and intelligent minds.

No, we shouldn’t rely solely on what they say, but to exclude them entirely from the conversation is wrong for so many reasons

Yeah the algorithm imo is a blessing and a curse. You can find your niche and get really good content relevant to you that’s not the shitty dance videos. But of course their algorithm is so great that it keeps you in that bubble and keeps you watching for too long.

And if we compare to YouTube shorts… I’ve found that place to be a hell hole. Facebook videos, Snapchat, all the other platforms have less people and a worse algorithm that pushes those kinds of annoying dance videos or (YouTube especially) right wing, misogynist, crap that I downvote, report, and select “don’t recommend” dozens of times without any change.

Anyways 😅 rant over. We should all get off the Internet more and touch grass tbf

Well if it was cash, it would also be Tesla fanboys paying his check if you think about it.

Controversial take but…

Yes, tiktok has several serious glaring issues as a platform but being such an absolutely huge platform, it has been (for a while now) much more than teen dance app. It’s a platform that under represented and minority groups have found an audience to share their voice. The are legit journalists, artists, celebrities, organizations, dank memers, etc using the platform for good.

Obv it would be great if it wasn’t all on tiktok (isn’t there a federated equivalent?) but seeing people rejoice wherever something bad happens to the platform just lacks… nuance I guess. I know it’s hard to compare social media platforms, but from what I can tell it’s one of the less controlling, censor heavy platforms. And it’s not owned by Elon Musk lol

Wait are you in support or against AI airplanes? Because mentioning an event where terrorists successfully overpowered human pilots doesn’t seem to be a great argument against AI pilots. More like an argument against human pilots.

Just imagining what you mean by a calming robot is terrifyi- I mean perfectly normal and I welcome our robot overlords.

Being social media, the bar for entry is practically non existent. So yeah, there are 12-25 year olds spreading misinformation. But also, being social media, there are plenty of very intelligent and honest people who provide real news with sources. The problem isn’t really tiktok specifically, just a lack of media literacy and social media

Average retail shrink is less than 2% of sales, and theft is only 65% of that 2% so it’s still a viable trade off. (https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-09-26/retail-theft-2022-112-billion-losses) They’re just realizing they can go back to the warehouse and replace the person at the desk with technology.

I love technology too but I’d hate dealing with all that too

Tidal pays artists even more, and has some features Apple Music doesn’t have for the same price (or cheaper if you’re Military/First Responder)

But of course Apple Music is better for some people for certain features it has. And Tidal’s hi-fi plan is more expensive. I get the knee jerk dislike of Apple, but nuance almost always gets lost online.

That being said, Spotify sucks lol

A lot of these streaming companies are just cable companies who needed to change their business to keep up, but don’t want to change their predatory practices

You can tell how much he cares about poor countries and how much they can afford because he only has a salary in the millions /s

Wow interesting. I was about to ask how they’re supporting 4k60 DP on the models limited to USB 2.0 speeds and how that all works. I decided to look it up though and found this comment;

"The USB Type-C connector allows for up to four high-speed differential pairs, which can be allocated to different protocols. For example, you could implement 5Gbps or 10Gbps SuperSpeed USB using two of the pairs and use the other two for dual-lane DisplayPort. Alternatively, you could have all four pairs used for quad-lane DisplayPort to drive high-resolution or high refresh rate displays.

Notably, there are dedicated USB 2.0 data lines on the USB Type-C connector that are always available, no matter the configuration of the high-speed differential pairs.

So in this case Apple just had to connect their existing USB 2.0 interface to those dedicated pins and run the new DisplayPort interface to the high-speed differential pairs. For the 15 Pro models, it may actually more complicated since they might need to add multiplexers to switch the differential pair lines between the SuperSpeed interface and the DisplayPort interface as appropriate."
