I will say one thing that is wrong about this picture and it is specifically to do with the “IT manager”
As anyone working in the IT field knows, job titles are generally not a great indicator for what you actually are. My job title is “IS Manager” but rather than manage people, I manage the actual IT infrastructure of my facility.
On my own, I’m the only one in IT here. I feel quite a bit like Dave sometimes, I’m closer to a network engineer and systems administrator than anything.
I agree with every point you make except for the desktop environment front end.
While it is nice to install a distro with a given desktop environment OOTB, you can always change it, and even have multiple ones installed at the same time. This is typically a better approach to testing out desktop environments because you don’t have to reinstall every time.
Asian makes and models have always gotten great gas mileage to begin with though, especially within the last thirty years. Hybrids for the most part have only brought good gas mileage to american manufacturers, but even then the Asian ones are still better than this.
That being said though, there’s no real evidence that hybrids are significantly better for the environment considering many drivers still use combustion for propulsion along with the fact that the electricity in the battery tends to be charged on coal power.
Electric cars are the future, but the state of electric cars right now are a serious mess due to manufacturer greed.
Powermacs were user serviceable back when security bits were uncommon. Once you got over the hurdle of buying like a $40 screwdriver, you could service them entirely yourself.
I’d go so far as to say the earlier iPods were user serviceable. Everything past the iPhone 4 though was a steady downhill without a doubt.
Nothing actually, I was just making a stab at vegans because they get so much flak lol.
I actually think the choice to go vegan is awesome, really it’s the ones that just shit on others that rubs me the wrong way, a good bit of Linux users do this as well. Personally I would never use windows unless it was absolutely necessary (I am a DJ and Producer in my freetime and I had a “pooprietary” controller that only worked with traktor, but now Mixxx has support for it so we cool now)
Even then, whenever I did have to use windows for that specific use case, I had it on a dedicated machine running an extremely stripped down version of windows (ameliorated) and it wasn’t a machine that I connected to the internet.
That being said though, I seriously respect people’s freedoms and even if I have different ideas or opinions than someone else, I’m not going to tell them they’re wrong unless it could harm them or something like that.
That being said though, and this could just be me, I think going vegan would be more difficult than switching to Linux in today’s day and age. With Linux you just need to find alternatives and integrate them into your workflow (there’s layers to that of course). With veganism, you have to inspect every single product to make sure it doesn’t contain animal products (which also has layers to it).
Hell with Linux, you can even use WINE to use windows programs, veganism doesn’t have anything like that! You can’t just wrap a cheeseburger in lettuce and call it vegan!
It’s honestly pretty awesome, genuine vegans are really strong people, and although the radical ones had put a sour taste in my mouth at first, over the years as I learned the hardships of their way of life, they definitely have earned my respect!
Wrong way to see it, yeah the boomers are rich but a lot of Gen X are broke as shit too. Kids cost money, and with the direction the economy is going, it is just the sad reality we face.
I am extremely thankful for the help my parents have given me, my dad was broke as hell for most of my childhood despite working his ass off, and this was pre-2009 recession, the recession made it worse and it is only recent he is starting to get a real foothold on finances.
Oh yes most definitely. Thank you for clarifying and I 100% agree with that. I have had to deal with that first hand as I work as a network administrator and have had cheap “Cat6” cabling come and be wired right, but used aluminum which not only hindered the speeds but actually made the cable run HOT (probably fine in air but a fire hazard in a wall, this was plenum too).
Bad cable quality is for sure going to hinder performance, but yes, a $1000 gold HDMI cable (scam to begin with because gold wiring isn’t even that expensive) is silly. Funny because that cable is actually worse than standard HDMI cables now because of the current spec (think that $1000 cable was like 1.4 or something)
It DOES look pretty sexy, but honestly the vanity of it isn’t even my concern. For the specs it has, $350 is pretty reasonable. My biggest thing about it is the ability to drive higher resistance headphones and also having a separate device to listen to music on!
Sony is definitely one of those brands that has hype from brand name, but the NW-A306 is definitely a good value for the buy. That being said however, a smartphone with an external DAC would suit most people’s needs perfectly fine.
You have a point with HDMI because that’s a digital cable.
Ethernet is also a digital cable.
Cable quality when it comes to digital doesn’t matter, but with analog it is far more sensitive to the quality of the materials used.
The walkmans are fine, I actually have an NW-A306 ($350). To be 100% clear, the other walkmans are PRETTY MUCH the same, you are mostly paying for a better build than anything. It’s a quality device but it isn’t like you really need anything better.
Your money is better spent on speakers or headphones over anything else. You can have the fastest car in the world but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have tires that can handle it.
Don’t get it twisted now
There really IS a perceivable difference. When given the right hardware and audio, it is a whole nother world when it comes to clarity, definition, and everything in between.
However, it doesn’t have to be nearly this expensive. I don’t see any real reason for a lot of it to be the price it is just because it has “quality components”
Don’t get me wrong, with analog, the quality of the components are far more important than digital, but it is a logarithmic curve. You can only improve so much before the gains become diminished.
Funny thing is I actually got a weeklong ban after I left reddit. I held out until infinity stopped working and then fully switched over to here.
I honestly wished I switched sooner, I always had an interest in Lemmy but never went full on until now. I can’t speak for the popularity it will gain because of the nature of FOSS in relation to the general public, but it is definitely a better system overall.
So you’re telling me they stole 3 million dollars?
