Now that Evernote limits free users to just 50 notes, it's time to jump ship. And there are some great alternatives to Evernote, ranging from simple note taking apps, to ones that let you make your own wikis.

I still use Tomboy Notes synced with Nextcloud & Dropbox. It’s ancient, but I’ve never come across anything else that does these things:

  • temporary sticky notes.
  • permanent sticky notes.
  • glorified clipboard buffer.
  • personal wiki.
  • light weight (no browser, database, or network required).
  • one small window per note.
  • optional categorization into notebooks.
  • desktop pkeyboard shortcut for searching notes or opening new ones.

I really hate web based notes. I want small quick responsive windows beside my browser.
