Yeah the direct touchpad feedback is great. It’s the rumble emulation when you’re not directly touching the touchpads that’s lacking.

Yeah I feel the same way. The haptics are very weak on the deck, like far weaker than even the Steam controller.

It’s so much better than FSR 1, but there’s a slight 2-3 fps performance penalty in some areas. In particular, I noticed a bit of extra juddering when you get to Last Light Inn.

They excel at battery life, sure, but also at heat and power efficiency — things that are really fucking important to a good laptop. Show me another fabless laptop that can transcode 4K video

Power efficiency is battery life. Battery tech hasn’t changed that much. And literally any laptop with a decent GPU these days can transcode 4k video without breaking a sweat. This is not new.

but the existing Mac user base seems to be upgrading less frequently, which says to me that something else has changed. Now what’s a big change that’s taken place in the Mac line in recent years? I’ll give you a hint: it’s not the pricing.

Yes, something has changed. The economy. People may have been able to afford $3-4k laptops a few years ago, but not now that food, gas, cost of basic goods has gone way up. The pricing may not have changed, but they’re now priced outside of what most people would be willing to pay when they have to spend so much on more important things.

I just don’t believe that a majority of the Apple community will stop upgrading if they see a more powerful M3. There’s still a lot of situations where the existing Apple Silicon line falls short, particularly in gaming and 3D graphics. Those who can afford it will upgrade. We’ve seen Apple users upgrade for less if you look at how many people used to clamor for the latest iPhone.

Apple Silicon isn’t the end all, be all of laptop technologies that’s going to make people satisfied forever. That’s not how the tech market works, especially not for Apple users. The only thing that’s different is the economy.

If this is true, NSA might be shooting themselves in the foot when they inevitably have to deal with Russia and China.

Why is everyone making this a price thing? The way I see it, this is because Apple Silicon is so damn good…I’m not going to need another machine until this thing stops working.

Saying that the market has reached a saturation point for Apple Silicon Macbooks is kinda silly. Apple Silicon is good, but it isn’t some miracle tech that defies market dynamics. The only area that Apple Silicon really excels at compared to the competition is battery life, but there’s a lot of other laptops that already beat it in terms of CPU and GPU performance.

There’s still room for Apple to grow, especially since they’re focusing on gaming now. The fact that Mac demand is falling in light of this indicates that there’s more at play than just everyone being content with their current Macs. Even if that was the case, why wouldn’t something so good be attracting new customers? Apple’s userbase is still a tiny fraction compared to Windows. If Apple Silicon is so good, why aren’t people flocking over in droves, especially since Windows literally has no answer to Apple Silicon?

Price is a huge motivating factor, especially since the economy’s going to shit.

Yeah seriously. Like I am okay with them auto hiding when the mouse is away, but nowadays, even when you’re mousing over them, they’re only like 3-4px wide. What kind of a mouse target is that?! Ridiculous.

Their success is well-deserved. I really hope Valve doesn’t let the momentum slow down though by working with hardware partners and getting SteamOS onto more devices. That’d make the lack of a Steam Deck 2 in the near-term a lot easier to stomach.

I dunno, the Deck is already getting slightly negative press for being behind spec-wise compared to the other portables out there. Might not be worth increasing worldwide availability if everyone already thinks its about to become outdated. Maybe they can have Deck 1 and Deck 2 in parallel just at different price points, kinda like how the Series S and X does it.

And they don’t track every minute thing you do

You sure about that? I just bought my mom a new iPad Air yesterday and the setup process was maddeningly privacy invading. Name, address, and phone number just to install anything from the Apple store. Both me and my mom, who’s not tech savvy at all, thought it was crazy the amount of info we had to put in just to get a usable device.

and act like malware to try to make you use their products.

There was also so many preloaded garbage apps installed by default. Why are apps like Measure there? Yes when I want to measure something…I reach for an iPad…instead of…you know…a tape measure… Just because they’re first party apps doesn’t make this okay. Also, Apple’s ecosystem is famous for vendor lock-in.

They may not be as blatant about it as Google is, but they’re every bit as bad tbh.

Wordpad is WYSIWIG, the alternatives you mentioned are more for replacing Notepad.

But yeah, why use WordPad when LibreOffice exists?

At least the boomerang curved into your palms. This literally curves away. The only part of your body that will be holding onto this “prototype” when you use its joysticks are the tips of your fingers.

Ever since I found out my old Netgear R7800 didn’t have a functional IPv6 firewall, I’ve been riding happily on the OpenWrt train. Now I absolutely refuse to buy routers that I can’t flash with OpenWrt.

why people were so quick to adopt Chrome which was Google controlled from the start.

Because for a long time Chrome was just much faster. It wasn’t until a couple of months ago that Firefox started becoming performant enough for me to use as a daily driver. Even then, there’s still issues with how slow it takes Mozilla to implement new web technologies like WebGPU, etc.

Matrix has the “spaces” concept.

Yeah the key thing for me was anonymity. Plus I think most spammers know about the + feature now and will get around it. Currently degoogling my life by switching everything over to relay and having it forward to my Proton mail. Never had such a clean inbox before and it’s amazing.

I recently switched away from Brave tbh. They keep falsely flagging my Rewards profile every time I travel or use VPN and it just seems shady as fuck when the new ad system they’re trying to push can withhold your funds whenever they feel like not paying.

Their VPN + Relay bundle is also pretty good if you want to monetarily support them while also getting something back. Relay is actually a killer product for keeping your inbox clean.

Categories? What do you mean by that?

Maybe if Hollywood would stop doing endless sequels and reboots, they wouldn’t need to own the digital likenesses of actors forever…

I have no problem with Redditors flocking over here, but I just don’t think online discussions should be “awarded”. It just distracts from actual discussion and turns everything into a popularity contest. Leave the karma and point hoarding on Reddit IMHO.

Haha, we’re used to not being mainstream, but we’re also known to be OS evangelists! So I think not being siloed and isolated is important.

Putting up with Reddit’s bullshit isn’t worth it for me personally either! I have, in fact, just deleted my 12 year old Reddit account in response to those changes. However, I also think that the mods are probably feeling a sense of responsibility to their community too. Like if they just jumped ship, Lord knows what kind of lackey Reddit will replace them with. I am sure watching your community turn to shit under an ineffective mod would just be devastating, and then to have THAT become the first thing a “mainstream” user would see due to the power of Reddit’s branding and Google’s existing search priorities is just the worst.

Hopefully, the Fediverse flourishes and becomes the it place to be and Reddit will slowly fade into obscurity just like Digg. I know I already feel pretty comfortable here!

“Officer, I am telling you those are my ABS! I’ve just been hitting the gym a lot. Hey, don’t lift up my shirt.”

How the hell did this guy think he was gonna bypass the scanner?

I think it’s more nuanced than that. For example, I know that some Linux communities still want a presence on Reddit because being able to reach more “mainstream” audiences is still important. It’s not Stockholm syndrome to want to continue to be able to do community outreach as best you can. It isn’t always the best choice to silo yourself into another corner of the Internet at the first sign of trouble.

Besides, we’ve seen a ton of mods simply doing double duty now, maintaining a presence on Reddit while simultaneously creating a new community in the Fediverse and I think that’s okay. Reddit didn’t kill Digg immediately and neither will the Fediverse kill Reddit immediately. All we can do is to show that the Fediverse is a more open and welcoming place than Reddit and I don’t think accusing all mods who aren’t immediately jumping ship of being on a power trip is going to help the cause at all.

I just deleted my Reddit account today. Don’t plan on ever going back, especially given how well Lemmy’s community has grown.

Maybe they just don’t want to give up on a community in which they put so much time, effort, and passion to help shape.

No, it has NSFW communities and also federates with other NSFW instances like lemmynsfw.com and pornlemmy.com

I think the Divinity Original Sin series and the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 might be good options! They’re good story driven games with good dialog, turn-based so not too mechanically demanding, and often times require paying close attention to subtle story beats in order to get the best outcome.

Last of Us and Uncharted 4 could also be good options because watching someone play the game is like watching a good movie.

Given how prevalent web technologies are, I am honestly surprised there isn’t a push towards having one common Electron installation per version and having apps share that. Each app bundling its own Electron is just silly.
