The price of retro-gaming is killing me
I love retro games, I always have. Despite my childhood being the 2010's, I grew up with a gameboy color, and I would emulate GBA, GB, and even N64 games on my crappy android I had at the time. Because of the power of emulation I was able to grow up with classics like Silent Hill, Megaman Zero, Pokemon Crystal, Metal Gear, so on and so forth. But when I turned 16, and I was able to get my first job, I became especially interested in collecting games, games that I actually like to play. But now that i'm older and I actually have financial responsibilities, and don't even get me started on how the retro gaming market just continues to inflate, its getting to a point where its just not feasible for me to continue collecting. Silent Hill 3 is literally my favorite horror game ever, and I will never be able to afford a copy, or even if I did have the money to spare I could never justify the absurd price. I will never own a legitimate copy of Megaman Legends, Pokemon Platinum, Rule of Rose, or so many of these games that I really do care about and want to be able to experience on authentic hardware. But whats even more frustrating about it all to me are the types of collectors that want something specifically because it is rare. The type of people to buy a game and shove it in a plastic box on a shelf where it will collect dust and never be played or appreciated beyond it's box art. It is so frustrating to me because collectors of games, as opposed to people who actually want to play and appreciate these games and make memories off them and share those experiences with their friends, are driving up the market values of games to unaffordability. Anyways I think I am going to give up collecting games. I still have a large collection of PS2, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, MSDOS, and PS1 games, but I am done trying to get more. I might occasionally shell out a little bit on the occasional cheaper game that catches my eye, but trying to get a lot of my favorite titles is a sisiphusian endeavor.

Organizational Question:
Greetings my fellow obsessive compulsives! FIXED - SNES9x emulator–ROMs running crazy fast after windows update
If anyone else uses this emulator and (unfortunately) Windows, are you seeing turbo run throughs when loading ROMS? This updates were installed yesterday and they're the only thing I can think of unless the rom speed can be controlled elsewhere in the system I'm not seeing: 2024-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5044285) 2024-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64 (KB5044033) Cheers. --------------- edit - fixed with tip below (- key slows down emulation)

UFO 50 is a retro gamer’s dream - I highly recommend it
I know this might be an unusual post, since this is a new game, but hear me out! I just picked up UFO 50 this week, and I can't recommend this enough to anyone who loves retro gaming. The premise is that this is a collection of 50 games from a fictional 8-bit console in the 1980s, with a little info card for each one providing its release date, developers, and some trivia. The game selection screen shows 50 cartridges to choose from: ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/03539cd6-3769-4819-973c-ebccef0ce82d.jpeg) These are all full games like you might have seen during the era - not minigames or demos, and the ones I've booted up feel pretty authentically 8-bit (with some modern QoL things thrown in). There are all sorts of cool ideas and game types: platformers, a point and click adventure, bullet hells, at least one full JRPG, etc. Some examples: ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7a3913be-1d9a-417a-ae3b-544ca6db944e.webp) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/920b24fe-6739-49e1-9162-31abccf97280.png) ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/e6c832f5-f246-454c-82fe-abbe11f46a19.png) It looks like as you browse through the chronological library, you see a sequel or two of previous titles. This was made by the team that created Spelunky, and it wasn't even on my radar until I fortunately saw a video a few days ago of *one* of the individual games (followed by some confusion when I couldn't figure out where to buy that game by itself). If any of this appeals to you at all, I highly recommend checking it out.

Anyone use Retropie? Two buttons won’t map.
I was going to post this in /c/retropie but it seems they haven't had any activity in 8 months. So I figure here is the next most appropriate place. I recently brought out my raspberry pi, and started taking care with it. I downloaded some new themes. I put a hell of a lot more roms into it. One problem is, if I try to connect a controller, I can map every button except LT and RT. At first I thought it was because I was using the 8 Bitdo Switch arcade stick (which also has the ability to connect to PC/Linux/Raspberry Pi. I didn't understand it, but I thought "Ok. Maybe something about it being an arcade stick means I can't use those two buttons on THIS stick. Whatever. I'll just use a different controller. So I pull out my WiiU Pro Controller......SAME EXACT ISSUE. So now I don't know WHAT to think. I WAS going to connect it to my switch, and see if I could do a button test on that, to see if it registers the inputs for those two buttons, but now I'm not sure that's needed if it's had the same issue with two unrelated controllers with two different form factors, made by two different companies. Is this a common issue with an easy fix, or has life once again said "FUCK YOU Lost_My_Mind!!!" ?

Retro Mahjong and your preferred games
Two years back i went to Sakuracon in Seattle and they had a whole room dedicated to teaching Riichi Mahjong, and my wife and i found it to be a particularly addicting game. Naturally wanted to find some console versions because we dont really have other people around us who are interested in playing the table game. ive seen a lot of retro mahjong games and not so much modern console ones. not really a big deal, but there seems to be a lot of import mahjong games and i cant really tell even from gameplay videos are considered ‘good’. So, if you like these games, which ones would you recommend? i have a super famicom, and a saturn. im not opposed to buying another console for a game if it is like the golden goose of mahjong. Additionally, why do a lot of these games have some sexy overtones to them? i dont mind it, but this game type seems to have it in excess.

Miyoo Mini+ Durability?
I sold my original Mini as it eventually ended up sitting in a case in a drawer rather than actually being played, partly because the form factor was so small but mainly because of all the reports of broken fragile screens from short drops like 2ft onto carpet. I recently couldn't resist the temptation to get a $35 MM+ from Temu and now that I have it I have a similar concern- is the MM+ as fragile as the original?
