Twitter is still more than alive and it is the only place, where communities of journalists and experts on a wide range of topics exist. Politics, economics, science, war, sport, you name it. Stop overreacting after every idiotic headline posted here.
There used to be reddit. In a way also YouTube. Fediverse is growing strong. There are messengers like Discord and Telegram - with search function for groups.
How’s any of this could replace Twitter? On Twitter, you can follow an MIT economics professor, a scientist from NASA, a military analyst, a sport journalist, etc. You can read every day what they think, what articles they share, ask questions and get answers. These people on Reddit, YouTube, Fediverse, Discrod or Telegram. There’s nothing like that on these platforms at that scale.
IndieWeb and the Fediverse really cover the social aspects quite well, and far better than Twitter ever did. I had to do almost as much work setting up my curation on the Fediverse as I did on Twitter, and I had to block far less since I wasn’t getting fed crap for “engagement” stats like on Twitter. You can still follow Twitter personas there too via tools like bird.makeup, though its a one way feed.
Plus that “accounts never gets suspended and no one but the user who made it can delete comments” just make me think it’s full of pedos and right wing domestic terrorists who found a place they can spew shit without anything happening
I really hoped Threads would supplant Twitter, but it wasn’t even given a chance. All the people I follow have either stuck to Twitter over Bluesky’s invite system and Threads being full of braindead Instagram people, or rejected the idea of a Twitter replacement completely (sorry, cohost is not a good replacement!)
Mastodon is awesome. I honestly enjoy that it’s not packing with people like Twitter or Threads. The content quality is like night and day.
Most Threads content is equivalent to instagram posts and comments and if you ever read instagram comments you know it’s one of the worst things on the internet.
Agreed, I think the battle between Threads and Twitter eventually benifts Mastodon and Lemmy. And it is good.

I just saw a thing that a lot of furries have moved over to bluesky, which makes me think of the story how DVD won over the other one (betamax?) because porn was more commonly sold using that format. I could certainly be misremembering that anecdote but in any case, I think whichever social media handles NSFW content better will win out in the end.

Despite it being funny, beta didn’t lose over porn. VHS with a larger tape length captured consumers with ability to record for longer.
Both formats were at first for home tv recording, pre-recorded distribution only came once many households had VHS and this was viable. The formats weren’t designed for it.
Waiting for BlueSky to open, frankly. The people who I want to follow are largely heading there, and those who went for other platforms scattered so widely and inconsistently, following them is not so simply as joining Mastodon.
I rejoined Mastodon last week, after people on here taught me how to use it properly. 😂
I’ve almost exclusively used it since and found some decent people through it. The only reason I’ve logged in to Twitter is because of two friends who haven’t moved yet. I’ll keep working on them to get them to switch. 😂
I only used the official app and couldn’t figure out how to curate my timeline. It’s only afterwards that people told me I had to follow hashtags, which it’s not possible to do on the official app (for some bizarre reason).
Now I’m using Tusky on Android and have got a timeline that works and is relevant to me.
I was about to say that’s crazy, you can absolutely follow hashtags from the official app… then I realized I’ve been using the PWA which I actually prefer over both apps.
(Not to say that Tusky is bad, try all the versions and pick the one that works for you.)

I like mastadon too. It also has a lot of Twitter accounts that copy over so for some of the sports teams I follow I just follow a copy on mastadon.

DVD won over VCD. This one was over copy protection since VCD were trivial to decrypt and copy at the time.

You absolutely can follow hashtags on the official app. Tap a hashtag on a post, or search for one and there is a follow button.
