Not read the article yet. I’m assuming that this relates to the ability of all diodes to emit and to an extent detect light. Heck if you backdrive solar panels they turn into LEDs for a short time too LOL.

The secret of all diodes is that they are all LEDs as well. The frequency determined by the bandgap. For most unfortunately, that means infrared and releasing the magic smoke.
