It’s fair if you ignore that it’s a problem of their own creation 😅

I do understand the point you’re making though

Gotcha. Yeah thats more or less how I remembered it… 🙃

Its a bummer, I used to consider myself a fan of Google’s direction. But lesson learned I suppose, money is power and power corrupts.

If I’m not mistaken there’s a more long winded watered down version at the end of a bunch of bs now. I may be misremembering or out of the loop on subsequent updates and changes though

I mean, he’s responsible for a pretty heinous thing in this instance… It’s not like people are pissing their pants over nothing.

If your company publishes an explicitly fabricated headline stating there was a missile attack that never happened, generated by ai, and then presented to a ton of people on a major social media site, criticism is pretty deserved… (≖_≖ )

God, generative ai is such a fucking caustic technology. I honestly don’t see anything positive and not disgusting enabled by this tech.

Edit: I see people don’t agree, but like why can’t ai stick to translating stuff and being useful rather than making horrifically unethical porn, taking the humanity out of art, and replacing peoples jobs with statistical content generation. I hate it here.

It didn’t? Last I heard google responded that it was an attempt to delay video loading for adblock users which seemed to most to be a transparent excuse. I haven’t followed it closely though, I’d be curious to know more if there’s an update

I mean that broadly seems like a good thing. Execution is important, but on paper this seems like the kind of forward thinking policy we need

You wanna be mindful to get the plane that the hot end moves around on parallel with the bed as best as possible. Software leveling and adjustment are nice, but starting with something very parallel is a whole lot better.

And if you have the option I’d consider using precision rails instead of steel rods for movement in the x/y axis, you can get cheap ones from like Ali express but they’ll be better for print precision.

With the hypercube we built at my last job, we were building a second printer but with rails instead of rods and my boss said he was way happier with the result, and we spent a while re-leveling the extruded aluminum pieces that our rails (that the hot end moved along) were mounted to, and that also helped.

Regardless, its better not to worry too much and just get started. I’m really bad about trying to perfect things or get everything just right right off the bat when I’d be better served by just starting and then figuring things out from there

That looks cool as hell! How funky

I had been pretty happy to find brave search as an alternative search engine, but this is kinda making me rethink using their products… :(

It’d be cool if someone could build an open source extension for Firefox that takes their idea of using browsers as a distributed crawler, but while making it clear that a website is being crawled and not selling the data for AI training, but honestly thats just me daydreaming. I’d love an open and private search engine that isn’t just a meta search :(

Edit:

Mojeek is UK based, open and private and actually have their own index, they aren’t just a meta search, but they dont have much in the way of any kind of summary or highlighted answers if you’re looking more for an answer to a question than the list of websites

Yep doesn’t come up as much when people mention privacy, but makes decent privacy claims, and aims to build a more fairly monetized search engine by giving 90% of money from ads to content creators (no idea how that will eventually work, but its a compelling concept)

Quant seems to have decent results from my initial couple searches, but like mojeek doesn’t seem have any kind of summary or answers function.

I think I’ll give all three a try each time I have a difficult search task and see if any of them might be worth switching to. Right now I often have to switch over to google even from brave when I’m having a hard time finding something.

You should post on the fountain pens community on the wayfarers haven instance! I’m sure folks there would love to see this, and even more so once you get a result you’re happy with!
