He said eventually for the robot price. They’ve been designing it to be cheaper to build, so if they get it to the scale they’re talking (big if) then it doesn’t seem unreasonable to be that price.


Inductive charging has come a long way and doesn’t have to have as big a power loss anymore.

E.g this government research project had 120kw at 97% which is on par or better with existing fast charging methods.

Edit: Also anyone charging on a regular 120v outlet, which is really all most people need for at home charging, is in the low 80’s. Also Wiferon has ones commercially available at 93%.

Maybe over an extended period of time, but that’s not something people get fired for right away. Also bugs are a fact of life in software, and while some developers may ship more bugs than others, work still needs to get done, and it’s often better to try and train and improve an existing employee than fire them too soon.


I do have a prime account as do use Amazon, but we haven’t watched a second of prime TV since they put ads in the included video subscription.

You know, I want this to be 100% true, but it’s not.

I’ve been in software development for over a decade and while the managers are definitely high up there on the list of causing problems, I’ve also worked with enough shitty developers that don’t care enough. Then not everyone provides the same level of code review, some people are pretty bad at it and just rubber stamp things, and then a problem gets through.


Well, the ID4 has had 18 since 2021.

Tesla started doing Cybertrucks in late 2023 though, so in that same time frame it’s 4 for ID4, and 8 for all of 2023/2024 (Edit: and the initial start of ID4 in 2021 had 4, and then 6 in 2022)

The site doesn’t have BYD, and while the site has jeep, I can’t seem to find the specific PHEV variant as nothing shows in 2024,but the Cherokee has 4 in 2023


As a second note to my main post - I was tracking these since the VW recall because I read awhile ago that recalls happen in clusters, and someone did a paper on it once (and i actually found the paper back then to confirm). When a company is working through a recall and knows there might be an issue, they’ll often hold onto it for awhile if they can (there’s probably some statutory limit) and wait for someone else to announce a recall. The person who announces the first recall in a cluster will often get more headlines/news and a greater impact on their stock.

I thought that was interesting when I read it last time and started keeping track on my VW post on the electric vehicles community when I saw the VW one which was the first I’d seen for EVs in awhile and wanted to see how many we’d get clustered together. It’s still going with this new CyberTruck one, but I’m not 100% sure that VW was the first.


Okay… so I knew this would be posted here when I saw it, and I knew there’d be a circlejerk of people dumping on Tesla/Elon because oh no a recall! One that can even be fixed with software.

How many of these other recalls did you see in the past few weeks though since Sept 18th? How many of these landed on the technology sub at that? These are all also EVs (with 1 PHEV)

Just had some more thoughts on this as well.

If Reddit can lure Patreon users, they could also likely protect that content creators data from being shared on the platform. The creator uploads a commissioned drawing for it’s paid users, and then someone tries to copy it and show it in /r/pics. But since reddit has the source image, they could be scanning for identical images by hash, or matching images via AI and then prevent it from being posted outside the community.

It definitely isn’t THAT easy, but it opens up the potential, and being able to tell your potential customers you have tools to help prevent unauthorized sharing on a prolific platform probably has some merit.


I think this comes down to what the intentions are

But create a system like Patreon where a content creator can put their own content and interact with their own users and there’s a revenue share between reddit/creator that doesn’t sound terrible.

It would cost a lot of money, but you can definitely go through and manually sanitize the data.

That would give a good bump in performance, both quality and resources required to run it.

All iOS apps on the app store need app approval. It’s the same for Googles app store, and I bet Samsungs and Amazon’s as well.

They test your app and make sure it functions and meets some basic guidelines.

The EU isn’t giving 3rd party stores carte blanche to break the rules, so yes apple has to approve it.

I imagine there’s probably some extra rules just for app stores, but if that’s the case (I don’t know) they’d need to be reasonable or they’d get in trouble.

I am curious though if apple can enforce rules on what apps go on the 3rd party store.

I’ll be honest with you: all but one of the half-dozen (which is too many, BTW) cars I own have manual transmissions, and half of them don’t even have ABS, let alone any other fancy electronic nannies. I mention that to help explain the extent to which I am fundamentally Not On Board with anything that interferes with my manual control of the car.

I would absolutely insist on the maximum torque the self-driving system could apply being much less than the strength of the human driver. I don’t know if that’s the case in late-model vehicles or not, but if it isn’t, I would consider those vehicles to have an unsafe design.

I really don’t know on this either. Even if you can overpower it though in a worst case fighting you scenario, I imagine that would be a pretty fucked up driving moment.


Exactly: the same signal. If the electronics controlling it receive one input from the steering wheel and a different input from the self-driving computer, are you sure it will prioritize the steering wheel input in every single possible circumstance? 'Cause I’m not!

That’s an interesting point there, but have you considered that even with a mechanical link and current safety features, it can still override you? I unfortunately almost drove into someone at very low speeds in a dark rainy parking lot, but the cars safety systems overrode me thankfully. I don’t think they would have been injured it was so slow, but just to show that nowadays with cars you don’t always have full control. In that case it was the brakes not steering, but modern cars can and will prevent you from changing lanes into someone in your blind spot for example.

All of it, mechanical link or not, ultimately comes down to software now, and I’m not sure there would be any real difference between your steering wheel input overriding a self driving system with or without a mechanical link. Putting torque on the wheel while in these semi self driving modes disables the self driving features, but that’s software that disables it when you take over. What if that software failed and you were now fighting the self driving car also trying to steer and as you tried to steer it put equal power against you thinking the steering was rough?

Also with steer by wire if there is a catastrophic failure, turning the wheel will simply do nothing. E.g if both motors simultaneously die, or somehow all 3 signal wires at the steering wheel are cut. Edit: I believe it’s dual battery redundant as well, so the HV and 48v would both need to die to kill steering.


So I looked it up, and you’re right, steering isn’t part of the power train. Looks like its it’s own thing.

I don’t think it’s right to lump it in with the L2 system though as it’s taking your input and translating it into the appropriate movement. The L2 driving system decides to go left or right and will send the same signal you would by steering left or right. I guess it’s just it’s own thing just like power steering is it’s own thing.

Obviously this is first gen tech in cars, but it’s been around for quite awhile in aviation with no backup mechanical link, we haven’t all died yet.

Tesla’s system is triple redundant, but that doesn’t guarantee something won’t go wrong, only time will tell on that one. Maybe we learn triple isn’t enough and the NHSTA mandates quad?

I do have a feeling though, that within 20 years or so, it’s almost all going to be steer by wire. It’s safer in the event of a crash as you don’t have the steering shaft in front of you. It also saves space from not needing all the mechanical linkage. I imagine insurance would have higher rates on cars that don’t have steer by wire as well due to increased risk in accidents.

Edit: I would add though that motors are part of their specialty, and the steer by wire system is using 2 of them, so they do get some of their existing expertise on that.

Edit: I guess the triple redundancy is on the steering input. Obviously with only the 2 motors, thats only double redundant.


There’s a lot of Tesla hate on build quaility on Lemmy/Reddit, but they actually have some of the most reliable power trains and exceptional software. There was some problems back in the very early days of the Model S with the 85kw/h packs, but they’ve moved beyond that now.

Given this is part of the power train, and software, it’s right in line with their expertise.



Now that it’s available for sale, and ignoring the looks/stainless steel aspects, I think the biggest thing to be excited about is the steer by wire.

Reviews seem to be saying it drives exceptionally well because of it, and that’d really differentiate it from the other options.

Edit: the steer by wire with the 4 wheel steering.

I was having a conversation in another thread a few days ago about the legality of completely fictional AI child porn and how that may be a safer outlet for those individuals as it involves no harm.

It’s legal in many countries, but also not legal in many countries.

In the USA, federal law says as long as its not obscene or has serious value its allowed, but really, good luck with those clauses. Then it says, it’s also legal unless it’s been transmitted by a common carrier, e.g mail, internet.

So, someone might be legally making their own CP so they don’t need to cause any abuse, and then Windows without their permission, uploads it to OneDrive.

You know the person making fictional CP would be the one thrown in jail for transmitting it over a common carrier, but maybe we should throw Microsoft in jail for doing that without permission and fucking us all over, over and over and over again with all this bullshit

They’re literally stealing your files. They’re probably training their AI on anything uploaded to OneDrive. It’s not like they even prompted you or gave you the ToS.


It probably doesn’t need to be an optional app if they’re giving you the ability to use any model you want at the OS level integration.

When you’re using the device for the first time show a screen and let them choose AI / provide their own local model.

So some years ago, the probe went into some area between our solar system and interstellar space. Getting info back about that is quite useful in learning more about that area.

I’m not sure if its through it yet, but if it is, then we’re getting data back about what’s after that as well. Does that data change over time? What if there’s yet another transition area and we learn about it?

Having something actually there helps us know if all these theories are right, and the more data we get, the more sure we can be


I mean, if you can do it in 2 hours I think it’s pretty fair to want you to do something else, but if it’s whole day thing and you finish an hour early you’re probably not going to be effective in that last hour anyway.

That’s not the best time to start something completely new


Electric motors can last a really long time, assuming no defects, they should outlast the battery by a Longshot.

That leaves the battery, and an LFP battery should also last a hell of a long time, probably a decent way into a million km before you have degraded to about 80%.

If you got those key items lasting, then it just depends on how well the rest of the car holds up, but replacing small parts while the motors and battery works is probably always going to be more cost effective.

The problem is the battery is a wildcard still.

We know how long those LFP batteries should last in a car, but they’re also pretty are in cars and we don’t have that real world data yet.

I also fear that OEMs will still gouge us on replacement batteries 15 - 20 years from now when costs are even lower and replacing the battery shouldn’t be so expensive.



Isn’t this just going to be a battle of AIs?

Train the AI on what glaze does and it’ll eventually be able to deglaze. So glaze gets better and stops it for a bit and then the deglazer gets better and wins again. Repeat forever.


My experience with an AI coding tool today.

AI: Okay, here’s an optimized method.

Me seeing the AI completely removed a critical conditional check.

Me: Hey, you completely removed this check with variable xyz

Ai: oops you’re right, here you go I fixed it.

It did this 3 times on 3 different optimization requests.

It was 0 for 3

Although there was some good suggestions in the suggestions once you get past the blatant first error


This is the military we’re talking about.
