I agree that the experiment was successful. He showed that through hard work and determination, shady scumbag online retailing and destroying your body, you might be able to make 65k. The main way people get wealthy is to be born wealthy. The rest of us can just look forward to trading our limited time and delicate health to scrape out a meager paycheck-to-paycheck existence.

Let that be a lesson to all the homeless people… make sure you go to your doctor regularly… your health is important!

He made $64,000 in ten months selling tables on craiglist? I’m wondering how many weekly hours of hard labor that took. Hopefully that’s net, not gross too.

How stupid though. Throwing it all away to prove to the rubes that millionaires are defined by mettle, and not largely happenstance (or decades in a chosen career)

How did he find the tables on Craigslist and post them on Facebook Marketplace before he had his own computer? A library? He mentioned he was handling logistics. I bet he got paid through Facebook which means be kept either a phone and a bank account or hooked it up on this fabled community computer he had found (his phone).

This experiment was specifically about rebuilding your life and not being homeless. Yet he still afforded himself some legs up.

It sounds like he could theoretically have used the computers at the library… speculating. It does seem kinda sus

You can’t use those for 8 hours a day. You are supposed to use those for like 1 hour per day. Its enforced by the computer which will log you out. You also can’t use them without a library card. In order to get a library card you need an ID. To get an ID you need around $80, ride to a government office, and your other paperwork.

If you don’t have your other paperwork and you are lucky enough to be a dude living in the state you were born you just need a ride to a bigger government office and an an entire day to wait in line.

If you were born in a different state you will need an internet connection, a credit card, and an address to get the documents shipped to. If you are a woman you will also need documents for every wedding and divorce in addition to your birth certificate. This could easily run you a few hundred bucks and 6 weeks. Remember you also can’t rent a mailbox without the ID or get a job to earn the money you need.

Basically even getting a library card may be a multistep process that takes months.

Wow I had no idea

When my mother in law came to live with us she had no current ID so we had to send away to multiple states for her birth certificate, marriage, and divorce decrees to substantiate who she was. It ended up if I recall correctly costing about $300 to get all the documents and required an internet connection, address, and credit card, several weeks, and a car to get back and forth to government offices. During this time it would have been impossible had she been on her own to get any benefits of any kind, get an id, rent, use a library computer, work or really do anything. In the place where we lived at that time—a red state—if she didn’t have a place to stay she could have been harassed or arrested for vagrancy.

I knew some of them believed their own bullshit, but this is another level of dumb.

In this case I think the bullshit wasn’t his, but his parents’.

Rich people never stop telling their kids that the poor are poor out of their own fault.

This guy did a great sacrifice trying to show the world proof of his beliefs, and learned valuable lessons in the process while unlearning the bullshit he was taught.

If I ever had to choose a rich person to become a politician, I’d pick this guy. After all, he now knows what being poor really means.

Easy to go at an experiment like this, when you can back out anytime. He learnt nothing and so didn’t anyone else.

Besides it’s revalitizing people who are actually homeless or in precarious situations.

Homeless people don’t have a resume that allows them to work as a social media manager nor the know how from the start to run a business.

Now try it again but give yourself amnesia so you don’t have any prior knowledge of skills or lessons learned from before.

Give yourself a severe drug and/or alcohol addiction for several years so you develop chronic health problems and hardcore substance dependence.

Experience enough traumatic events that you develop some severe form of mental illness, preferably multiple at the same time.

Destroy all your contacts from your former life, don’t record anything or log anything because you can’t have any permanent support group. Surround yourself only with people as or more desperate than you.

Make sure your social problems have caused you to rack up a significant number of criminal charges, bonus points for felonies that stay on your record for all to see if anybody even considers hiring you.

Now you’re close to experiencing what many homeless folks’ lives are actually like. This guy’s “experiment” is asinine. Just another sigma grindset bootstrap husk social influencer who has no idea what it is actually like to have nothing.

His conclusion is that people are homeless because why? They aren’t grinding hard enough? Because they aren’t putting in the hours? Because they just don’t really want it bad enough? Miss me with that bullshit.

Simply accept free furniture on Craigslist and sell it on Facebook, what is the difficulty? Everyone has a pickup truck or SUV they can use to tote furniture around and a house they can use to store it pending the sale. You can easily make a million in a year, I would have done so but I had to stop early because of reasons.

I appreciate you contextualizing the torment that homeless people face. The more we can show and visualize their struggles, the more empathetic people will be, and the more political will can be realized to hopefully pass smart legislation actually geared to solve the problem.

Denying yourself any semblance of joy and slaving away for 14 hours a day until your health is totally fucked - and he’s in his 20s! Oh but he scraped up an extra 60k.

I dunno about you guys, but sign me up!

Thank you for writing this. You’ve inspired me to try to do some community service

What sort of thing do you have in mind? Did you look into any local orga already?

Black ended the challenge having completed 10 months, with just 60 days left to run. He had managed to make a grand total of $64,000.

Despite failing to make the million dollars he had aimed for, Black says it was still a successful experiment after demonstrating how it was possible to rebuild his life through the power of determination.

‘We should always remember to help those in need because it could be the opportunity that they need,’ Black said.

All things considered he did pretty good. $64,000 is a lot more than most people make in a year and he did it in 10 months when he was homeless.

The median household in the US makes about $75,000 many with one income earner.

That $64,00 would be zero because in those 10 months he said he constantly visited the doctors office because he was concerned about his health.

Its the daily mail. Nazi paper. Probably went for his throat as he’s seen as a champagne socialist.

Those downvoting me need to know about how they praised Hitler. Look up their history. It is not a valuable news source.

I’m watching this guys youtube video explaining his side and his rebuttal is actually very simple. In his expirement, he did not say anything about being homeless and he never said that you can earn a million dollars in one year. His goal was to have a template showing how to build a business. I still think he didn’t learn anything. He is just a super entrepreneurial guy who thinks that he is helping people by encouraging them to start a business and that grind culture can give you a better life. He seems to not want to look above his own place in our system and encourage any substantive change in the social safety net of the US. I’m glad he realized that being a good son, when his dad is dying of cancer, is more important than being a hustler. But he doesn’t seem to have internalized the idea that being a good human is more important than being a hustler on a normal day.

He was never even truly homeless. He had a lot of free help from others.

Unrelated, but are y’all really linking the daily mail?

Pretty damn far from a million, but much more than many make in a year still. I do wonder if he used contacts/network he made while wealthy, that would easily completely invalidate the point he was trying to make.

I read a bit about this the other day. He absolutely used his connections and skills to make this money.

In fact one of the first things that happens is he gets a free place to live while working. He’s documenting this process the whole time, you see, and someone who was a fan let him stay in their trailer.

He winds up making money by reselling coffee marketed as “for dog lovers”.

How in the fuck a homeless person is supposed to even start doing that is beyond me, nevermind getting a free place to stay.

So I guess he kind of did solve the problem, right? I mean, if homeless people fail at the challenge of obtaining a million dollars in one year, they can always just quit being homeless. Should take less that 10 months, max.
